New Hospital Opens in San Juan Del Sur
At the end of March the much anticipated new hospital was inaugurated in San Juan del Sur. Mayor Mayra Solis performed the ceremonial grand opening with hundreds in attendance to see the new facility. The five million dollar project is spread over five blocks, and took more than two years to build.
Located a mile from the beach, next to the Santorini neighbourhood, it’s bringing a new level of care to the area previously only available in the larger cities.
The new facility is here to serve the local population of over 16,000, expats, and tourists. It has has 45 beds, an operating room, and an impressive amount of modern medical equipment for a smaller municipality in Nicaragua.
It was busy from the the first day when it provided care to hundreds of people, performed 11 surgeries and even delivered the first two babies!
The hospital is named after Gaspar García Laviana a Spanish priest, poet and guerrilla who championed the local people against the Somoza regime in the 1970’s.
It’s a welcome addition to the growing town.
